10 Creative (and Healthy) Things You Can Do With Beans

If you’ve ever spent time pondering what to do with that can of beans in your pantry, you’d be better off wondering what you can’t do. No matter what you’re cooking or baking, “the possibilities are endless,” says Maggie Michalczyk, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Chicago. You can add beans to almost anything.

Beans are versatile, nutritious, and inexpensive, she says, making them an easy way to jumpstart your protein and fiber goals for the day. One cup of pinto beans, for example, has 18 grams of fiber and 14 grams of protein. Plus, they contain disease-fighting antioxidants, as well as essential nutrients like folate, iron, and potassium. Research suggests regularly eating beans can help prevent heart disease, reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and Type 2 diabetes, and improve gut health.

Michalczyk uses beans in both sweet and savory dishes. There are more than 400 kinds, which can be overwhelming, so if you’re just starting your legume ..

Dementia risk could dip with common vaccine, study suggests

The link between the zoster vaccine and a lower dementia risk has been strengthened in new research.
A study by Stanford Medicine, published in the journal Nature on April 2, found that the vaccine — which is used to prevent shingles — reduced the probability of a new dementia diagnosis by about 20% over the next seven years.
«If these findings are truly causal, the zoster vaccine will be both far more effective and cost-effective in preventing or delaying dementia than existing pharmaceutical interventions,» the researchers noted in the study.
NEW BLOOD TEST DIAGNOSES ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND MEASURES HOW FAR IT'S PROGRESSED
These findings also support an emerging theory that viruses impacting the nervous system can increase dementia risk.
Senior study author Pascal Geldsetzer, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Stanford, said he considers these findings «hugely important» for clinical medicine, population health and research.

After Val Kilmer’s pneumonia death, what to know about the respiratory virus

Val Kilmer’s death on Tuesday has sparked reminders of the risks of pneumonia.
The actor, best known for his role as Iceman in «Top Gun» — along with «Batman Forever,» «The Doors» and many other movies — was 65 when he succumbed to the respiratory infection in Los Angeles, The Associated Press reported.
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes, confirmed the cause of death, noting that the actor had previously recovered from throat cancer after a 2015 diagnosis.
LINGERING LUNG DISORDERS 5 YEARS POST-COVID: HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW
Pneumonia is defined by Cleveland Clinic as an infection in the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.
This can cause the lung tissue to swell and create a buildup of fluid or pus in the lungs.
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News' senior medical analyst, said the risk of pneumonia depends on the underlying health conditions of the patient and the strength of the person's immune system.

Exclusive: More than 150 House Democrats Urge HHS to Restore Title X Funds

More than 150 House Democrats signed a letter sent to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on April 3, calling for the department to undo the freeze on millions of dollars allocated for family planning services.

The letter, shared exclusively with TIME, comes after HHS confirmed this week that it is withholding Title X funds from 16 organizations “pending an evaluation of possible violations” of federal civil rights laws and President Donald Trump’s Executive Order declaring that undocumented immigrants are barred “from obtaining most taxpayer-funded benefits.” Title X is the nation’s only federally funded program dedicated solely to family planning, and each year allocates millions of dollars for clinics that provide birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing, and other health care services for people from low-income households. HHS did not respond to TIME’s questions earlier this week about the details of the “possible violations,” ho..

Here’s why 90% of Americans don’t sleep through the night, according to expert

Sleep is of great importance to overall health, but many people struggle to get quality slumber.
In an annual survey by U.S. News, which was released in March, thousands of Americans weighed in on their sleep habits.
While the National Institutes of Health recommends seven to nine hours of sleep every night, 58% of people reported sleeping six to seven hours a night.
HEAT EXPOSURE LINKED TO BETTER SLEEP, EXPERTS SAY — HERE'S WHY
Meanwhile, one in five Americans (20%) reported only getting four to five hours.
The survey also found that 25% of respondents use over-the-counter or prescription sleep aids.
The largest finding revealed that 89% of U.S. adults wake up regularly during the night.
More than one in three (40%) Americans said they wake up often, even if it doesn’t happen daily.
Sleep expert Wendy Troxel, PhD — a RAND Corporation senior behavioral specialist and licensed clinical psychologist in Utah — shared a few reasons Americans aren’t sleeping through the night.

Ozempic, other semaglutides linked to hair loss: Here’s what to know

Semaglutide medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have exploded in popularity in recent years due to their effectiveness in diabetes control and weight loss.
Research has revealed additional benefits beyond those primary uses — but some negative side effects have also emerged.
While gastrointestinal issues are the most common side effects, a recent study by the University of British Columbia linked GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) agonists — the class of drugs that includes semaglutides — to an increased risk of hair loss.
MEN GOING BALD TURN TO 'NEW BOTOX' FOR HAIR LOSS TREATMENT
The researchers analyzed data from 16 million patients from a health claims database, narrowing it down to 1,926 semaglutide users and 1,348 users of bupropion-naltrexone, another type of weight-loss medication.
After adjusting for other factors, they found that the semaglutide users were overall 50% more likely to experience hair loss compared to the other group.
Women were more likely to have this o..

Death probe of ex-Yankee’s son triggers carbon monoxide warnings from experts

Experts are speaking out about the potential dangers attached to carbon monoxide, as authorities continue to probe the death of teen Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner.
While the cause of Miller Gardner's death remains unconfirmed, Costa Rican Judicial Investigative Agency (OIJ) General Director Randall Zúñiga told reporters at a press conference on Monday that high levels of carbon monoxide contamination were found in the Gardner family's hotel room, and that it might have caused the teen's death.
«Which then leads us towards a line of investigation in which it seems that this person could have died from inhaling these very dangerous gases,» Zúñiga said.
Zúñiga said investigators who work on a specialized dangerous atmospheres team detected «high emissions of pollution of…carbon monoxide» in the room at Costa Rica's Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, which is where the Gardners were staying.
Officials at the hotel are de..

Trump Administration Freezes Critical Title X Funding for 16 Organizations

The Trump Administration is withholding millions of dollars allocated for family planning services from more than a dozen organizations.

Enacted in 1970, the federal family planning program known as Title X makes millions of dollars available to clinics that provide health care services like birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing for people from low-income households. On March 31, Planned Parenthood—one of the largest Title X providers—said in a press release that nine of its affiliates received notices from the federal government that their Title X funding would be withheld starting April 1.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

According to Planned Parenthood, more than three-quarters of its affiliates receive Title X funding, and in 2023, there were more than 1.5 million visits to Planned Parenthood health centers that received Title X funding.

One of the nine affiliates affected is Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai’i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky (PPGNHAIK), which se..
