As of July 2024, 7.62 million patients were on the waiting list for care, with 6.39 million in need of specific medical treatment, according to the latest Referral to Treatment (RTT) data from the National Health Service (NHS), England’s publicly funded health care system.

Nasal spray flu vaccine gets FDA approval for home use: ‘A good alternative’

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved FluMist — the nasal spray flu vaccine — for home use by a patient or adult caregiver, the agency announced.
FluMist has been in use for a couple of decades, but this is the first time a vaccine for influenza has been approved for self-administration without a health care provider.
«Today’s approval of the first influenza vaccine for self- or caregiver-administration provides a new option for receiving a safe and effective seasonal influenza vaccine, potentially with greater convenience, flexibility and accessibility for individuals and families,» said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in the Sept. 20 announcement.
FLU SHOT SCHEDULING: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET THE VACCINE?
The home version of FluMist will be available starting next year, according to Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier.

Testosterone therapy could help boost women’s sex drive as they age, but risks exist, experts say

Celebrities' use of testosterone to boost their sex drive could lead more women to try hormone replacement therapy (HRT), experts say.
Actress Kate Winslet recently revealed in an appearance on the «How to Fail» podcast with Elizabeth Day that a dip in libido could mean an imbalance in testosterone levels.
«A lot of people don’t know this, but women have testosterone in their body; when it runs out, like eggs, it’s gone,» the «Titanic» actress, 48, told a listener.

«So, once it’s gone, you have to replace it, and that is something that can be done, and you’ll feel sexy again,» Winslet said.
«I know,» she added, without offering additional details.
Hormone expert Dan Holtz, co-founder of the Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center, echoed that HRT is used to «optimize hormone levels in men and women as they go through life.»

20 worst places to live if you have asthma, per major health organization

Nearly 28 million people in the U.S. have asthma, or about one in 12 people — and depending on where you live, the condition may be more difficult to manage.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recently released its Asthma Capitals report, which ranks the 100 most populated U.S. states based on how challenging they are for people with the chronic respiratory disease.
«This is not a report about ‘bad’ cities for asthma — rather, it is a report that indicates the factors that can make living with asthma more challenging,» Kenneth Mendez, president and CEO of the AAFA in Virginia, told Fox News Digital via email.
‘SMART MASK’ COULD DETECT ASTHMA, COPD AND OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS, RESEARCHERS SAY
The report designates «asthma capitals» based on the prevalence of the disease, the number of asthma-related emergency room visits, and asthma-related deaths.
«The cities at the top of the report tend to score higher than average in at least two of these categories,» Mendez noted…

Children once held hostage still working through trauma: ‘Are they coming for us again?’

Dr. Efrat Bron-Harlev, CEO of Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel, recently addressed the United Nations about the plight of the children who were kidnapped from Israel by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023.
She said that 38 of the 253 people who were abducted that day were children. The youngest was Kfir Bibas, just eight months old at the time.
The child is still in captivity, along with his parents, Yarden and Shiri Bibas, and his brother, Ariel, who turned five last month.
THRIVING WITH ANXIETY: EXPERT TIPS ON EMBRACING THE MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION
Bron-Harlev, a pediatrician, said children released after 50 days in captivity are still, to this day, waking up terrified in the middle of the night.
«They were not allowed to cry, not allowed to laugh, not even allowed to stand up.»
She said the children appeared «like shadows of children. No impressions on their faces. They were not happy. They were not crying. They were mostly very, very silent.»

The latest strain of the COVID-19 virus, XEC, is circulating across the country.

Some of the states with the highest cases — 10 or more each — include California, New Jersey and Virginia, the data showed.
'VACCINE FATIGUE' BLAMED AS ROUGHLY HALF OF PEOPLE IN US WILL SKIP COVID AND FLU SHOTS THIS YEAR
As of Friday, the variant is not yet being tracked by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the World Health Organization (WHO).
KP.3.1.1 is still considered the «predominant variant» of the virus, according to the CDC’s website.
Jake Glanville, PhD, an infectious diseases expert and CEO of Centivax in San Francisco, California, told Fox News Digital that XEC represents a shuffling of two descendants of last year’s JN.1 strain.

During pregnancy, a woman’s brain experiences ‘profound changes,’ new study finds

The body isn't the only thing that changes when a woman is pregnant.
A new study conducted by researchers at UC Santa Barbara mapped how the brain responds to rapid hormone changes during pregnancy.
Pregnancy is a «transformative period in a person’s life accompanied by profound hormonal and physiological changes,» study co-author Dr. Laura Pritschet said in a conversation with Fox News Digital.
AMERICANS ARE HAVING FEWER BABIES AS BIRTH RATE HITS HISTORIC LOW, CDC REVEALS
«Investigations that compare women pre- and post-pregnancy provide the strongest evidence to date that the human brain undergoes neural change during this period,» she said.
«Yet, how the brain changes during gestation itself is virtually unknown.»
Pritschet and her team launched the Maternal Brain Project, which scanned a first-time mother’s brain, once every few weeks, from preconception through two years postpartum.
This allowed the researchers to record changes in the brain in «pretty exquisite detail,» Pri..

Raccoon roundworm infections reported in Los Angeles County, health officials warn

A rare parasitic infection known as raccoon roundworm has been confirmed in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Two people in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County have been diagnosed with the infection, Baylisascaris procyonis, which is caused by a parasitic worm from the raccoon’s intestines.
When it infects humans, the parasite can affect the brain, spinal cord and eyes, potentially causing brain swelling and eye disease, the health department warned.
SUPERBUGS DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE COULD KILL 39 MILLION PEOPLE BY 2050, LARGE STUDY FINDS
After maturing in the raccoon’s intestines, the worms produce eggs that are then passed with the animal’s feces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
After two to four weeks, the eggs become infectious. The eggs can survive for years in the right conditions.
«Aside from its natural host, the raccoon, some accidentally infected species include domestic dogs and humans,»..

Health officials in Los Angeles County, California, on Wednesday warned of an «unprecedented» rise in dengue fever among residents who have not traveled out of the country.
At least three cases of dengue have been reported in residents in the Baldwin Park neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles after they were bitten by local mosquitoes, Los Angeles County public health officials said.
«This is an unprecedented cluster of locally acquired dengue for a region where dengue has not previously been transmitted by mosquitoes,» said Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Dengue is typically acquired after traveling abroad to a country where dengue is commonly spread. The first locally acquired case in California was reported a year ago.
