How to choose the best sleeping position for you, according to the experts

A key part of the nightly bedtime routine is getting comfortable in a certain sleeping position — but how do you know which one is best?
A majority of American adults (69%) sleep on their side, according to a recent poll. That is followed by those who sleep on their backs (19%) and their stomachs (12%).
Sleep expert Wendy Troxel, PhD – a RAND Corporation senior behavioral specialist and licensed clinical psychologist in Utah – said that sleeping positions are «highly subjective» to each individual.
MOST SLEEP-DEPRIVED CITIES IN US REVEALED IN REPORT: WHERE DOES YOURS RANK?
«The primary consideration should always be individual comfort, [which] can depend on factors like body type and any underlying medical conditions,» she said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Troxel mentioned that side sleeping, particularly on the left, is «frequently recommended» for people facing complications such as sleep apnea or acid reflux.
«These conditions can worsen when lying on the back,» she noted…

What the Trump Administration Rescinding Emergency Abortion Guidance Means for Care

The Trump Administration has added to the confusion surrounding the U.S.’s shifting patchwork of abortion laws by rescinding Biden-era guidance that directed hospitals to provide abortions in emergency situations, even in states where abortion is restricted.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

The decision, announced on Tuesday, does not change the federal law that was at the heart of the Biden Administration’s guidance: the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires hospitals that receive Medicare funding—which is most of them—to provide stabilizing treatment to patients experiencing medical emergencies or transfer them to a hospital that can.

The Trump Administration’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said in a press release that it “will continue to enforce EMTALA, which protects all individuals who present to a hospital emergency department seeking examination or treatment, including for identified emergency medical conditions that place the ..

TV host discovers he has skin cancer during live on-air broadcast

A Fox TV news anchor discovered this week that he had skin cancer during a live TV segment.
Mike Jerrick, co-host of «Good Day Philadelphia» on FOX29, was broadcasting a skin care segment with Dr. Joanna Walker, a dermatologist with the Tara Miller Melanoma Center at the University of Pennsylvania. (See the video at the top of the article.)
As they discussed the importance of checking the skin for signs of cancer, Walker inspected a spot on Jerrick's right elbow, pronouncing that it was basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer.

«It has all the features of the most common type of skin cancer, which is also very treatable when it's caught early,» Walker said in the segment.
Jerrick expressed surprise, asking, «What are you going to do to it, burn it off?»
The dermatologist replied that the cancerous spot most likely needs to be «cut and stitched.»
The good news, she said, is that basal cell is a «..

Doctor reveals the ‘hateful 8’ seed oils that could harm your health

Americans are becoming more cognizant of the ingredients in their food amid the Make America Healthy Again movement.
Seed oils — which are plant-based cooking oils that are often used in processed, packaged foods – have been touted by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as «unknowingly poison[ing]» Americans.
Any oil that comes from seeds is classified as a seed oil, but that also includes some that are beneficial, such as sesame seed oil, peanut oil and flax oils, according to board-certified family physician Cate Shanahan, M.D., who is based in Florida.

Shanahan, who specializes in using traditional food to promote health and reverse disease, shared with Fox News Digital which seed oils should be avoided.
«I had to create a term that described the harmful oils in our food supply … the 'hateful eight seed oils’ or the ‘hatefully eight oils,’» she said.
Those eight include corn, canola, cotton seed, so..

10 Things to Say When Someone Won’t Get Off Their Phone

Trying to talk to someone stuck on their phone is such a universal experience, there’s a name for it: “phubbing,” short for “phone snubbing,” or ignoring someone in favor of a phone. “Everyone hates it, but everyone has also done it,” says Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University and author of the upcoming book 10 Rules for Raising Kids in a High-Tech World. “When someone phubs you, you feel like you’re not important—that whatever is on their phone is more important than you.”

Phubbing negatively affects mental health, relationship satisfaction, and overall well-being.That’s why it’s worth speaking up about digital distraction. “It’s challenging and awkward, but we should be doing this,” Twenge says. “We need to be confronting this situation.”

Here’s exactly what to say when the person you’re trying to talk to won’t get off their phone.

“I’ve got a group chat that’s blowing up right now, but I’d rather talk to you without..

Carbohydrates and fiber linked to healthier aging in some groups, study finds

Carbohydrates may have gotten a bad rap, but a new study from Tufts University finds that some are better than others — and that older women in particular could reap the benefits.
The research, which was recently published in the journal JAMA Network Open, found that daily consumption of fiber and «high-quality» carbs in midlife can contribute to healthier aging and overall better wellness among older females.
The researchers defined «healthy aging» as «the absence of 11 major chronic diseases, lack of cognitive and physical function impairments, and having good mental health.»
EXPERTS REVEAL HIDDEN WAYS SUGAR ACCELERATES AGING BEYOND JUST WEIGHT GAIN
The study was led by researchers from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
«The main takeaway of the study is that consuming dietary fiber and high-quality carbohydrates — those from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes — is associat..

Drinking Coffee Linked to Healthy Aging in Middle-Aged Women

Good news for coffee lovers: A new study suggests drinking a cup—or several—each day could be linked to long-term health benefits.

The study, presented on Monday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Orlando, found that roughly 3,700 women who met researchers’ criteria for “healthy aging” typically consumed an average of 315 mg of caffeine per day when they were between the ages of 45 and 60, mostly from drinking coffee. And for the women in that group of “healthy agers,” each extra cup of coffee per day was associated with a 2-5% higher chance of faring well as they aged, up to five small cups per day.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

“We found that women who consumed moderate amounts of caffeinated coffee in midlife were more likely to age in good health,” Sara Mahdavi, an adjunct professor in the University of Toronto’s department of nutritional sciences who led the research, told TIME in an email. “That’s not to say coffee is a cure-all, but for those w..

More seniors are using cannabis than ever before despite health risks, research shows

New data has revealed that cannabis use among older adults is at an all-time high.
Researchers at UC San Diego and NYU discovered that marijuana use by Americans aged 65 and older increased by nearly 46% from 2021 to 2023, according to an NYU press release.
As more states legalize marijuana for recreational use, as well as for medicinal therapies, accessibility to the drug is more widespread, particularly among aging adults.
DEMENTIA RISK CONNECTED TO CANNABIS-RELATED HOSPITAL VISITS, SAYS STUDY
The research, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that 7% of 15,000 adults in this age range reported using cannabis in the last month, according to 2023 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. This was an increase from 4.8% in 2021 and 5.2% in 2022.
While marijuana use surged in both men and women, it was more prevalent among women.
The research found that increased use was associated with health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmon..

7 Things You Need to Do Before Air Conditioner Season

Hot days can feel unbearable without a strong air-conditioning system. Yet many of us take these essential devices for granted. “The only time people pay attention to their air conditioner is when it’s not working,” says Jeffrey Siegel, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Toronto who researches ventilation and indoor air quality.

That’s a mistake: Taking good care of your AC can help ensure it provides sufficient air flow, controls humidity, is energy efficient, and lasts as long as possible. “An air conditioner that’s not well maintained will not provide the same level of comfort” as one that is, Siegel says.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Here’s how experts suggest tuning-up your AC so it works optimally.

Change the filter

There’s no universal equation that determines exactly how often you need to change your AC filter, which traps airborne particles like dust, pollen, and other pollutants. Manufacturers typically advise replacing it every three months, and t..
